Hey its Sunday and now I am counting my “change”

Filed under: General — JamesC @ 3:53 pm

Well it’s Sunday now and I have the games going on behind me so the day is like any other Sunday.

Now I am really trying to keep this blog on a personal point and not politics but it seems everything that goes on in my life at this time is tied to the politics that are going on around the world.

I did an interview with the owner of a small electrical company on Friday; this is unusual in my field as most companies do not do interviews on Friday. This company did not have an ad in the paper, or any other job listing data base that I search normally through. I heard about this company from another electrician that I meet while waiting to talk to a friend about some info on what is going on in the job market. Networking is a powerful thing in construction some times you will find a contact that you will not see anywhere else.

Anyways I digress, the reason I mention this interview is because of what happened. The owner took the call and I asked him if he was looking for an electrician with 30+ years of experience. At first he said no they were not hiring but then asked me to drop by the next morning and interview anyway.  An interview on Friday? This seemed strange to me but I made the appointment and he asked me to drop by early morning around 8Am. This is strange also but I agreed and got there a few minutes early (around 10 minutes till 8:00).

When I got there one of the employees was loading up a pick-up truck with some material and tools, I told him I was asked to drop by and he said the owner would be in shortly. Sure enough around 5 minutes after 8 the owner should up driving the service van. He apologized for running late and we went into his office and sat down with some coffee. He explained that he was over stretched trying to do to much to keep everything running.

I handed him my resume he gave me an application and said to just fill out the first page with the contact information and then reference the resume on the rest (he said this would save time and we could talk more).

So I did as he asked and soon we were talking about a job. The first thing he said was that it was hard to find an electrician with my work history in Nashville (I thought to myself this sounds good). He followed that up by saying how much a person like me could really help a small company like his (once again sounds good).

Just FYI

I was reading over at my wife’s blog Hillbilly Poltics when I read in the comments a discussion going on about redistribution of wealth and it reminded me of a book I read in collage. To add to this discussion I added this it is a rather long post so read it if you like:

While I was in collage studying philosophy I read a book about wealth distribution. I wished I could remember the title but sorry I can’t anyways; the book went on to explain why redistribution of wealth in a free economic society will never work.

It was broken down into a couple of steps over a 20 year period sort of like this.

Wednesday not much “change” here.

Filed under: General — JamesC @ 3:26 pm

Well it’s Wednesday and not much has changed, I am still waiting to hear from the Temp Service hopefully something will be out today.

I called around and talked to a few friends to see if there are any offers out there that are not listed in the paper (sometimes a company will ask other employees if they know some one looking for work) but no leads yet. Now I am sure that some will say it is just lack of work in our area that is causing this. But when you go to a job site and see more and more Hispanics on a job you just have to wonder.

Now maybe it is just work is low though I can see lots of work going on around here and rumor is there will be for the next 2 years at least. But after looking at the workers coming off those job sites, non English speaking way out number the English speaking 2 maybe 3 to 1.

I did call one company I heard is always hiring but once I told them what I needed for money that call was over, seems their pay range is $14.00 an hour tops. This is a little better then un-employment but still won’t pay the bills. I did ask how someone could work for that price they say they can find people all day long that will take it.

Now I know that un-employment is at its all time high these days but with 12 million illegal immigrants in the USA (this could be higher by this article “Number of illegal immigrants in U.S. may be closer to 20 million”). So really what is the problem here? Lower the number of illegal immigrants and we could all be working at a good wage, this would help the economy and the mortgage issues in one wack with out the government needing to bail out anyone.

Anyways that is just my point of view I am sure that others have a different plan but it sure make sense to me.

Monday morning a start of a new week.

Filed under: General — JamesC @ 12:46 pm

Well here it is Monday morning (well it’s almost noon while I am writing this). The Titans won yesterday so that is real good news.

Anyways I did 2 interviews last week and one did call back this morning, it is for a Temp. Service which is ok they offer better benefits then most construction companies do, the job is re-working some security cameras and card readers at a local prison. It should last till March of 2009; this is really good news as it will at least keep the bill collectors happy for a little while. The back ground check will take around 3 days so till then we will just juggle the bills around.

Now I have been trying to figure out why this happened and what can I do to prevent this job issue for re-occurring. I have weighted some of my options and none seem to bright.

The reason I was laid off was due to money, in other words the company I was working for seemed to think they were paying too much for my years of experience. After all they can hire workers with a lot less experience do a half ass job and still make a profit. So what can I do to help my situation?

Do you happen to have some change?

Filed under: General — JamesC @ 10:41 am

Well it is Saturday morning, not much to do the weather is a little damp here (it must have rained last night). I had thought about going out side and do a little yard work, maybe later when the sun dries up the ground.

Anyways I did not hear from any of the companies I interviewed with on Thursday of course I really didn’t expect to hear back from them on Friday construction never works that way. Most companies do not even take applications on Fridays; I guess they are getting ready for the weekend like all the rest of us.

Now I have been chatting with a few people on line both from the left side of politics and the right, and a few have asked why I feel this is due to the new power adjustment this great nation is seeing; Well let me try and explain how it works here in the real world of the 95%.
